Montelukast belongs to oral selective leukotriene receptor antagonists, specifically inhibiting the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1, is an anti-inflammatory agent that improves inflammatory parameters in asthma.

PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

Indications

  • For the treatment of asthma;
  • For the prophylaxis of asthma in which the predominant component is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction;
  • For the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Dosage

  • One tablet daily.

Administration

  •  Administered orally;
  • Should be taken in the evening regardless of food intake.
  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or to any of the excipients.
  • Do not give montelukast 10 mg to children less than 15 years of age. (This age group has a specific dosage of 4 mg or 5 mg).

Very common

  • Upper respiratory infection.

Common

  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting.
  • Elevated levels of serum transaminases (ALT, AST).
  • Rash.
  • Pyrexia.
  • Montelukast is not a medication for acute asthma attacks.
  • Caution should be exercised when using montelukast 10 mg in individuals with a history of mental illness.
  • Treatment with montelukast still requires avoiding aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma.
  • Use montelukast with cautions during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only when absolutely necessary.
  • Drive with caution as the medication may cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, and hallucinations.
