Bromhexine is a mucolytic type mucomodifier. It exerts its action on the gel phase of mucus by activating the synthesis of sialomucins. By restoring the state of viscosity and elasticity of bronchial secretions, it promotes expectoration through effective bronchial drainage.

PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

Indications

  • Secretolytic therapy in acute and chronic bronchopulmolnary diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport.

Dosage

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 8 mg (1 tablet) three times daily. Adults may increase the dose to 48 mg/day.
  • Children 6-12 years: 4 mg (half a tablet) three times daily.
  • Children 2-6 years: 4 mg (half a tablet) twice daily.
  • This medication is not recommended for the elderly, and those with renal or hepatic impairment.

Administration

  • Orally administered with a full glass of water.

 

  • Known to be hypertensitive to bromhexine or other components of the formulations.
  • Children under 2 years.

Possible adverse reactions:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders (Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and upper abdominal pain including gastralgia.)
  • Risk of increased bronchial congestion in some patients unable to expectorate effectively.
  • The combination of bromhexine with cough suppressants is irrational as there is a risk of mucus buildup in the respiratory tract.
  • If cases of severe skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SSJ)/Lyell’s syndrome and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) are present, bromhexine should be discontinued.
  • Bromhexine precipitates in a solution with a pH greater than 6. This tablet should not be dissolved in a solution.
  • Stellavon 8 contains lactose. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.
  • Bromhexine should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Bromhexine has not been observed to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
