PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

Indications

  • Blood glucose control: Used in conjunction with diet and exercise to lower blood glucose in adult and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with type 2 diabetes.
  • Cardiovascular protection: Reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and death from cardiovascular disease in adults with type 2 diabetes.
  • Renal protection: Reduces the risk of progression of chronic kidney disease in adults.

Dosage

  • Starting dose: Usually 10 mg once daily.
  • Maximum dose: May be increased to 25 mg once daily if necessary and well tolerated.
  • No dose adjustment is needed in patients with hepatic impairment or the elderly.

Usage

  • Swallow the tablet whole with water, once in the morning, with or without food.
  • Hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or to any of the excipients of the drug.
  • Urinary tract infection, vaginal yeast infection, balanitis.
  • Dehydration, dizziness, dry mouth, hypoglycemia.
  • Rare: Diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Empagliflozin should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and ketoacidosis, patients with end-stage renal disease or undergoing dialysis.
  • This medication should not be used in patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
  • This medication contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) of sodium per tablet, and is essentially considered “sodium-free”.
  • Avoid the use of empagliflozin during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Empagliflozin has minor influence on the ability to drive and use machines. Patients should be aware of how they react to drug before driving or operating machinery.
